Disliked:Rosewood São Paulo gives the unfortunate impression of being a hotel where guests are assessed according to how they are dressed, rather than welcomed according to the standards one would expect from a property of this supposed calibre. The attitude of the staff appears distinctly uncomfortable towards leisure travellers who may wish to sit at a restaurant table after spending an entire day exploring the city, or indeed after arriving from a 14-hour flight from Dubai, without first dressing for an occasion. At Le Jardin, the experience was particularly disappointing. Hostesses could be heard making comments about guests while chatting among themselves, while at breakfast the reception desk was at times simply left unattended. The security staff were unnecessarily intrusive and, on occasion, frankly discourteous in their interactions with hotel guests. An episode at the South American restaurant on the fourth floor was perhaps the clearest illustration of the problem. We had reserved a table for 8:15 pm. When we arrived after a full day visiting the city, we were informed that no indoor table was available and that we could instead dine outside, with blankets kindly provided to keep us warm. For guests holding a confirmed dinner reservation at a hotel of this category, the suggestion was frankly absurd. More remarkably, after we objected, an indoor table suddenly became available. By that stage, however, the situation spoke for itself, particularly when viewed in the context of our experience throughout the stay. We chose to leave rather than dine there. Even the supposedly more sophisticated aspects of the service fell short. Orange wine was served at refrigerator temperature and in an inappropriate glass, a surprisingly elementary mistake for a hotel that presents itself at this level. The overall impression is of a property that confuses exclusivity with snobbery and style with genuine hospitality.
