Luxury stay in a stunning hotel

Liked:Beautiful accommodation within a stunning building, located very centrally but in a quiet setting. From the moment we checked in we were treated really well, all staff were friendly, courteous and helpful. We were given champagne while we checked in and our cases were taken straight up to our rooms for us. We had booked three rooms for our family, celebrating a special birthday, and were very lucky to be upgraded to suites - the birthday girl even received a lovely surprise treat in her room. The rooms were absolutely stunning, especially the huge and luxurious bathrooms. We loved our stay and it made our celebrations all the more special. Thank you ☺️

Not So Subtle Homophobia.

Liked:We arrived at the Stock Exchange Hotel at noon. The signage is tiny, so once we confirmed we were in the right place, we walked through the automatic doors — as one typically does when entering a hotel, rather than scurrying up from the sewer like the rats we were treated like. A hotel employee, who had been helping someone with their luggage, urgently called after us: “Excuse me. Can I help you?” I stopped in the doorway, briefly wondering if we had accidentally entered a restricted wing of the airport. We had luggage. We looked like people checking into a hotel because, inconveniently, that is exactly what we were. He asked if we were trying to check in and reminded us that check-in was at 3 p.m. Had we arranged and early check-in??? Fair enough. But instead of checking whether a room was available, or directing us to the front desk, he suggested we wait in the lobby and have champagne. Which sounds lovely in theory, but in practice felt less like hospitality and more like a hostage negotiation with bubbles. When I explained that we did not intend to sit in the lobby for three hours drinking champagne, he finally offered to hold our luggage. We returned at 3:01 p.m. He looked at us again as if we were swamp creatures who had learned to use revolving doors. Then recognition dawned, and he once again tried to steer us toward the lobby for champagne. We had already rearranged our schedule around the hotel’s check-in time and had somewhere to be at 4, so no — we simply needed to check in, shower, and leave. ... continued in next box ..

Disliked:He escorted us to the desk and, with an audible huff, informed the front desk agent — let’s call her Cheryl — that “these gentlemen don’t want champagne; they just want to check in.” Insert eye rolls to one another. The look they exchanged said plenty. Then Cheryl looked at our reservation and asked, with visible confusion and disapproval, “Oh… you’re staying in the same room?” Yes, Cheryl. My husband and I are staying in the same room. Because we are married. That is generally how that works. Her tone and expression made the moment deeply uncomfortable. Whatever personal beliefs she may hold, guests should not be made to feel judged at check-in — especially not at a hotel presenting itself as luxury. Shove your religion down someone else’s throat. The room itself was beautiful, though it carried a distinct scent of “Ghosts of Cigarettes Past.” And honestly, this was not even close to the nicest room of our trip, so the attitude felt especially misplaced. We stayed in a simpler, slightly worn room in Llandudno with a beautiful view and a kind, accommodating young owner running the place. I would choose that experience a hundred times over this one. I book a lot of travel and have lifetime Marriott Bonvoy status from more than 500 nights stayed. I know good hospitality when I experience it. This was not it. Do better. The not-so-subtle homophobia at the front desk was noticed, and it absolutely affected our stay. I had been using AI tools to help find the right hotels for this trip. This one was a miss, and I’ll be making sure the downsides are clearly noted so future travelers can make a better-informed choice. Knee Jerk reaction would be ONE STAR, but the room was nicely appointed (no cream for the coffee) and the location was good. So a reluctant 3 Stars (2.5 feels correct). Having a beautiful English accent and perfect grammar doesn’t excuse your better-than-thou facial expressions and actions. Do Better for the next guests.
