Over priced and over rated with rude and arrogant staff.

Liked:The room was a good size and the terrace had very nice view of the river. The food at breakfast was very good when it finally arrived and the selection was nice. We were there during winter so we didn't use the pool or the beach. The bed was clean and comfortable (but we didn't look at the mattress or under the bed) and the A/C and fridge worked.

Disliked:The check-in lady was rude and arrogant and her attitude set me on the defensive right from the start. Demanding information about where we were going after we left (before we had even got our room key) and making assumptions about my residency status in Mauritius. The hotel itself is old and tired and in need of a complete refurbishment. It is overpriced and over-rated. It may have been a four star when it was first opened but it is no more than a two star now. The tiles in the bathroom are chipped and the grout has discoloured. The ceiling has leaked over time and just been botched up with plaster and silicon and painted over. The blackout curtain was falling off the rail and the handle was falling off the sliding door to the terrace. The towels were worn and threadbare, the soap tray was chipped and the magnetic catch for the toilet door had fallen off so you couldn't keep the door closed. Everywhere there was evidence of wear and neglect, lack of maintenance and lack of investment. The cost of food and drink there is obscene. On the first day we went for a late lunch and they had no Phoenix beer (the national beer) either on tap or in cans/bottle. Instead I had to drink some vile IPA they had on tap. My wife ordered a cider and the girl arrived at the table with a 330ml can of local Phoenix cider and a glass. We were charged 350Rs (€7) for a can that costs 50Rs (€1) in the supermarket a few km away. Despite the fact that the bar was empty it took them 25mins to bring a cold platter of cheese and meat and some arabic dips. We refused to eat in the hotel because it was just so ridiculously expensive. We went to local restaurants (of which there are many) and enjoyed really good Mauritian food at a reasonable price. To order two croque monsieur sandwiches to our room from the room service menu was 2500Rs (€45) without any drinks.
