Every hotel on this list holds an independent third-party certification or has published measurable sustainability results for its specific San Francisco property. Luxury flagships and properties with typical nightly rates above $250 are excluded. What remains are budget and mid-range options where you can verify the green claims before you book.
How we selected these hotels
Each hotel went through a two-stage check. First, we searched the US Green Building Council's LEED project database, the Foundation for Environmental Education's Green Key directory, and IHG's Green Engage property records for the specific San Francisco address. Second, for hotels without a formal certification, we looked for published sustainability reports containing numeric targets or reduction figures tied to that property.
Hotels that only reference a brand-level sustainability philosophy, with no property-specific data, did not make the cut. The same applies to any property where typical nightly rates exceed $250, and to well-known luxury flagships regardless of their eco credentials.
The result is a short list where every entry checks out.
