Very good staff

Liked:I'm editing my review and raising my rating by one star due to the professional approach of Kelli Phillips, General Manager. She contacted me immediately after the review was published. I'm glad that constructive criticism helps improve a hotel's services. I believe that whatever was bothering us will be (or already is) resolved. We were at the hotel at the beginning of April. For a 10-day stay, we can give the hotel a reliable rating. Friendly service at the front desk, good housekeeping, and very friendly housekeeping staff who were able to accommodate our presence in the room. Nice, thick bathrobes. A nice gift from the hotel on arrival. Bottled water was readily available at the front desk at any time. The hotel's greatest asset is its location, as it's right in the heart of Manhattan but fortunately not in the heart of Times Square. Our room faced the courtyard, and although it overlooked another wall and windows, it was truly quiet. The hotel has two elevators, and they always worked quickly and efficiently. The Lantern's Keep bar is surprisingly nicely designed, with friendly service and good cocktails. Our room was small, and we knew it. However, the bathroom door was poorly placed. It had to be kept closed at all times to function. The rest of the room was okay, although the furniture is old and worn. For such a long stay, we decided that the lack of daylight was another drawback. A dark room is fine for two or three days. We had a mandatory breakfast, which we were dissatisfied with and only ate a few times. This was the main reason for our dissatisfaction and the lower rating for the hotel. We learned from the manager mentioned earlier that during our stay, the hotel was undergoing a major change in its breakfast offerings, and we were caught in a transitional period that wasn't easy for either the guests or the hotel itself. I understand the situation; it can happen anywhere. Management recognized the problem and promised to improve.

My goto in Times Square

Liked:The Iroquois and its neighbor, The Algonquin, are my standby hotels in New York and I've been staying at one or the other for years. Recently my wife and teenage son had an extra day in the city and I booked them in. The staff were warm and friendly, saw my family's exhaustion and comped us breakfast at their lovely restaurant. (Later, when they returned, they also comped my son a piece of their luscious chocolate cake.) If you're in town for a show you just can't beat the location. It's right next to Times Square and the theater district but that half a block makes a world of difference. It's not nearly as loud as the mega-hotels like the Marriott Marquis or the Sheraton Times Square nearby. Unlike most newer hotels the Iroquois has character, history, and a lobby. Don't take it's age to mean that the rooms aren't elegant and up-to-date either. They are perfect little jewel-boxes. But the fact that there is a lobby to sit in so you don't have to spend all your downtime in a New York-sized hotel room is an enormous win. (You can also wander next door to the bar at the Algonquin which has room to spare.) We also got abundant bottled water. Another big win in New York in the summer.
