Location, staff, cleanliness, room amenities and comfort, and overall hotel amenities were great.

Liked:The breakfast was delicious, plentiful, and very nicely presented. Service was gracious and timely. The restaurant where breakfast was taken was elegant and atmospheric. Highly recommended breakfast. We really enjoyed the onsen and facilities on the top floor, as well as the large bathtub in the hotel room with plumbed hot spring water. The amenities in the room were great, including robes, slippers, pajamas, coffee and tea making, bottled water, individually packaged toiletries of all sorts, and a very comfortable bed. Air conditioning worked well too!! There are three different bus stops just steps from the hotel, as well as the train about a 5-7min walk. Very convenient for arriving without a car, and convenient for doing the "Golden Route" from the hotel with public transportation. All of the main Hakone sights were accessible from the hotel's location, but in a quiet town without a crazed tourist vibe. There were some small local restaurants near the hotel, as well as a bakery and convenience store. The hotel staff was efficient, helpful, and friendly. Lovely Japanese gardens on the property.
Disliked:The portions for dinner in two different hotel restaurants were quite small. Expensive is fine if worth it, but the dinner options did not offer value for the money.

Deeply Disappointing Stay

Liked:We ended our trip at Fujiya Hotel expecting a relaxing, high-quality wind-down. Instead, it was the most stressful and disappointing part of our entire journey. Our arrival set the tone. For a hotel of this calibre, we expected a warm welcome—something as simple as a drink or a cold towel after travelling—but nothing of the sort was offered. The check-in experience felt transactional and underwhelming, lacking any sense of hospitality or care. Throughout the stay, staff were consistently dismissive and uninterested in assisting beyond the bare minimum, which left us feeling more like an inconvenience than valued guests. Transport was a major issue. There were no Ubers or taxis available, and staff were entirely unhelpful in finding alternatives. The hotel shuttle only runs to the nearest train station and staff refused to take us any further—even when we offered to pay. For a hotel of this calibre, that level of inflexibility is unacceptable. Dining was another low point. The Kikko-so restaurant kaiseki menu was frankly revolting and completely unjustifiable for the price. We enjoy food and are open to different cuisines, but this was genuinely unpleasant. We were also required to pre-order meals two days in advance, only for the order to be incorrect anyway. To add to the frustration, we were not informed in advance that shoes must be removed for dinner—being caught unprepared felt unnecessary and avoidable. The hotel itself feels tired and neglected. The interiors are dated, there is a stale smell throughout, and the beds are uncomfortably hard with poor-quality pillows. Basic amenities were lacking. The bar closes at 10pm, and when we asked about options afterwards, we were told to go to 7-Eleven if we wanted a drink—hardly the response you expect from a premium hotel. Breakfast service was equally frustrating. Eggs were poorly cooked, tea and coffee took an unreasonable amount of time to arrive, and fruit was served after the hot meal. Staff refused to join tables for our group of six, and while the tea and coffee station was decent, it was far too small to cater to the number of guests. We understand it was Golden Week, but that does not excuse the complete absence of customer care. At this price point, the experience was simply unacceptable. Overall, this stay fell far below expectations and cannot be recommended.

Hoping to go back soon :-)

Liked:A wonderful historical hotel in the middle of the Hakone region. Service was excellent, staff was impeccable, and we enjoyed the old-fashioned feeling the place gives.
