Great location, but needed staff on site.

Liked:The location was excellent, within walking distance of good restaurants, the castle, and other sites.

Disliked:I do not like self service properties, especially when they do not advertise as such. My phone stopped working and there was no one to help. We could not even call a taxi. It was our first stop in our journey and it made it very stressful.

A comfy and well-located option to explore EDI while staying outside the busy tourist areas.

Liked:Our Deluxe Family Room was newly renovated, very clean, with a lovely courtyard. The hotel is located in a charming residential neighbourhood away from the busy tourist areas. It’s close to Arthur’s Seat and about a 45-minute walk southeast of Edinburgh Castle, with easy bus access to the city centre.

Disliked:The Gifford is self-service, so there are no staff onsite. First response seems to be an AI bot but we were able to communicate with the staff between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. There is no elevator, which is worth noting if you have heavy luggage. There is a luggage storage area available to hold bags on departure day.

Clean but not what we hoped for

Liked:The rooms were impeccably clean. Location on main bus route was good.

Disliked:There was not a single human working there check in was automated and I did not get the code for our room so was delayed in checking in. We were assured that there would be someone to help with bags to second floor as there is no lift. As above no one was there. Some poor lady had two massive bags and was on the top floor. The room and communal area were spotless. That is where the positive s end sadly. There was no lounge or bar and no food available. In our room we were only given one tea bag. In truth the place was not a hotel, it is more an Air B&B , albeit a good one. For the facilities ( not) on offer it is very overpriced. We could have and wish we had stayed in the Ibis in the City centre. Similar price but with a bar, lounge and people. We wish you the best but we will neither use you again or recommend you.
