What Guests Say

8.7

Excellent

2,427 reviews

Highlights

+Friendly, helpful staff (reception, bar, cleaning)
+Beautiful castle setting and well-maintained grounds
+Excellent breakfast and strong food offerings
+Comfortable beds and spacious rooms (for many guests)
+Atmospheric, historic character
+Clean and modern-enough public areas

Could Improve

–Some rooms tired or in need of refurbishment (humidity, lumpy pillows)
–Limited public transport / far from city centre; no shuttle
–Occasional housekeeping lapses (missed linen/bathroom cleaning)
–Slow service at times (long waits for some meals)
–One notable negative booking/management incident (extra room charge)
–Bathroom renovation issues in some rooms

Cleanliness8.5

Generally described as very clean and well maintained across grounds and rooms, with a few reports of missed linen changes and occasional bathroom cleaning lapses.

Service9.0

Staff repeatedly praised as friendly, helpful and accommodating (reception, bar and cleaning staff); however, there was at least one significant negative experience with booking/management that detracted from service for that guest.

Location8.3

Beautiful, atmospheric castle setting and grounds highly praised, but several guests noted it is a fair drive from the city centre and lacks convenient public transport or shuttle options.

Room Quality8.1

Many guests enjoyed spacious, comfortable rooms and good beds, though some rooms were described as tired, humid or in need of refurbishment (lumpy pillows, poor bathroom renovation in one report).

Amenities8.9

Strong on characterful public areas, grounds and food-related amenities (breakfast, bar); limited transport/shuttle services noted as a gap.

Value for Money8.4

Most guests felt the experience (setting, food, service) justified the price, though issues like unexpected booking charges and costly local taxis reduced perceived value for some.

Food and Beverage9.5

Consistently praised — breakfast described as superb or the best, and food repeatedly called fabulous; one comment noted that service at lunch could be slow.

Overall Experience8.9

Overall very positive: many calls it a memorable, atmospheric castle stay and a highlight of travels, tempered by occasional service/booking and room-condition issues.

Sells elegance delivers underwhelming

Liked:The location was perfect for our stay, and as you drive up you cannot fail to be impressed by the exterior of the property.

Disliked:We booked into the restaurant for both nights but we found the food and restaurant sadly lacking, we was sat down near the open flamed grill where the extract was obviously playing up letting smoke into the room which along with an acrid smell started to sting our eyes, when the starter arrived a beetroot cold plate we found this was poorly executed and very over priced. The main which was a Jerusalem artichoke risotto which had obviously been cooked earlier and left in the pass under the heat lamps as it was congealed and reminiscent of wallpaper paste and as for the Jerusalem artichoke that was non existent! Very poor to the point where we walked out without eating it, and I refused to pay at check out next day. The next day we ordered off the bistro menu upstairs and it was perfect in every way’ we just wish we had gone for that on the first night and our experience in the hotel would have been far better. Breakfast’s was very nice with good quality local produce, very nice and the coffee was excellent. Maybe the decors could do with refresh and replace some of the furniture as it’s had its day, yes they are antique but we have antique furniture and it can still function as a piece of furniture! . I will add for us the staff who we interacted with where amazing.
