A right royal visit….. 5 star throughout…

Liked:We visited Sandals Grande Antigua in March (into early April). We cannot praise the hotel and the staff enough. We stayed in the Sunset Bluff rooms (club level) which was a lovely size with plenty of space and a lovely balcony overlooking the resort and views of the ocean. The rooms were cleaned and restocked every morning and on the odd occasion where we had drunk a particular bottle, a quick call to the concierge and they delivered a new one almost immediately. The food was fantastic. It was really easy to find space at the various restaurants and the menu ordering was a lovely change to buffet style all inclusive. Breakfast offered a range of locations, a few buffet options but our favourite was Eleanor’s where the menu ordering options were first class. Evening options are again wide and varied and on the last night we did opt for the candlelight dinner on the beach which was a great end to the holiday. The pools were lovely, although we did spend more time at the smaller main pool rather than the large one as we preferred a quieter day. Both have swim up bars and great atmosphere, just depends on your like. There are also a number of smaller pools around the resort but these do not have bars but tend to be closer to your room which is always well stocked. It would be wrong not to touch on the towels and sun loungers… First off, there are plenty of loungers across the resort, but….. a significant number get reserved very early. This is either by butlers or other guests. These tend to be those in prime spots but if you do not mind being set back a bit or a bit further up the beach then there really won’t be any issues. The beach is lovely. The sea was nice and warm and there was plenty to do. The included activities were all great. Snorkelling was out on a nearby reef which was 10 mins away by boat and included. The trip lasts about an hour a runs 3 times a day. We also used the kayaks, paddle boards but not the hobby cats. There was always plenty to availability and never a wait. We didn’t partake in the free scuba diving but a lot of people did and loved it. The greatest asset to the resort is not the pools; the beach; the food and drink or the countless activities, it is the staff. We couldn’t fault any. The attentiveness was first class and their attention to detail was fantastic. They really are an absolute credit to resort. We will return to Sandals and can see why so many people keep going back… a fantastic holiday where we were treated like royalty from the moment we checked in to the minute we left.

Relaxing Vacation

Liked:We have done a couple of Sandals resort previously in Jamaica and wanted to try something different off the main island so we chose Antiqua. The resort definitely needs some upgrades but it is at least clean. We had a pool walkout room in the Oleander building and it was in the perfect location. I loved that it had its own private pool for the building. Very quiet and relaxing. The beaches were beautiful but you do have to get your chairs early. It is a public beach so it is busy when ships are in but those folks rent chairs from vendors beyond Sandals property. Vendors were polite and never were a bother. The staff was hit or miss. Some were very polite and some were grumpy. Wait staff I felt were a bit slow. We constantly had to ask for refills for water and other drinks when they were simply standing around. We didn’t use the main pool so unless the younger couples were there the majority of the people we saw were 55+. We were a little disappointed by the food. When you pay that kind of money for these types of resorts you should be getting better quality meats. Cheap cut steaks and fatty ribs/wings. Mario’s Italian restaurant was by far the best restaurant on the property in my opinion. Pasta was excellent and so is the appetizer bar. My husband said that it had the better steaks then the steak restaurant OK Corral. Overall it was still a beautiful week to just relax and unwind. Excited to go to a different Sandals next year.

Beautiful island but dated property and service

Liked:Although a lovely vacation overall this property and their service standards are not what we’re used to from Sandals. We have been to the St Lucia Grande twice and Curocao once both with the Butler over the water bungalows and beach side bungalows and every dollar we spent was worth the service and luxury. Unfortunately that is not the case at this property. Very dated bungalows and the service is lacking tremendously. Although I would return to this beautiful island I would never spend the money for the upgrades here because they simply don’t meet our expectations.

Shirnell at Mario’s Restaurant

Liked:My waitress Shirnell at Mario’s Restaurant was fantastic. She was very nice to my fiancée and I and was constantly making sure our drinks were filled and our food came out good. She did a great job!
