Life saver! Great stay!

Liked:We had a wonderful experience at SGI! We originally had booked an AirBnB that upon opening the door smelled musty and had visible mold around the vents! We walked in, assessed the situation, felt the effects immediately (headsche, coughing, sneezing, etc) and walked out! This left us in quite a predicament looking for somewhere to stay last minute, late at night after a long drive! Finding some place that did not have a stinky mold problem was key too! We eventually landed at a hotel by Fountain of Youth (Spark) that smelled very fragrant in the lobby but a bit moldy in the room (not nearly as bad as the Airbnb but the overly fragrant lobby should have been dead give away), but by that time it was after 10pm bc we had driven around town desperately looking for a room, smelling the same issue in Best Western’s front office (So I’m sure the rooms were no better). The high end hotels (Hilton bayfront and Renaissance) were >$500 and we were stuck so had to stay the night at Spark. After staying up and reading a ton of reviews on places in town that night, the next day we walked into SGI and asked to see/smell a room. Explained our extreme sensitivity to mold (instant headaches, congestion, sneezing, snotting, coughing, etc) and the reason why we needed last minute lodging. Danielle was happy to show us a room in one of the newer acquired and renovated buildings, facing the fort (51&52). It was fresh and clean and did not smell moldy (didn’t smell like anything, which was great, not trying to cover anything up like the previous hotel) so we were thrilled! Booked 2 nights and was not disappointed. The staff goes above and beyond to make their guests (and possible future guests, like we were that day) happy and comfortable. Everyone was so lovely! Our room (64) faced the street across from the fort (there are some that are over the courtyard) but we were up by the time the vehicles really started wizzing by (8-9) so didn’t bother us, and I’m a light sleeper. Nights were quiet and felt safe. There are 2 locks to get in, one at the top of the steps to access the upstairs rooms and of course the one to the room. There’s a shared balcony overlooking the fort, we sat out there and had some snacks one afternoon, it was really nice. There’s also a rooftop area with tables and chairs between the 2 fort facing buildings, accessible only to the rooms up there (it’s just beyond the first lock). Rooms are spacious with high ceilings, bed was comfy, shower was roomy. There’s a wine bar in the lobby, we don’t drink so it wasn’t something we were interested in, but lots of ppl seemed to be enjoying it whenever we walked by. We noticed some live music at the wine bar as well, which was nice. We filled our water bottles in the lobby each morning (staff was happy to add ice) for the day to set out and explore. They offer breakfast (not included) but there are so many breakfast spots that I wanted to try so we didn’t get to try theirs this time. It is very convenient for Inn guests though. The rooms are scattered throughout the area around the lobby & wine bar which didn’t bother us at all. Thought it was kind of cool, actually. Parking was heavily discounted in the large parking garage across the street (directly across from the beautiful visitor’s center) and added to your SGI bill. You can park whenever you roll into town, just pull up to the loading zone at the entrance to the Inn and they’ll give you the parking fob, even if it’s before check in. And you can leave your car the whole day you check out too. During your stay, you have in & out privileges to the garage with the fob, which daily parkers do not have. Upon checking in, you just park in that previously mentioned loading zone and the staff will help unload your bags and bring them to your room with you. Then you just go back and move your car to the garage, easy peasy! We will definitely be back bc we have family in the area to visit, and SGI will be our “go to” place, esp rooms 51, 52, 64, or 65 in the newer fort facing rooms. So thankful we found it!
