Avoid if you can

Liked:Once upon a time, the name "Hilton" was synonymous with luxury. That time, alas, is long past. I stayed at this hotel for 4 nights for a business conference. Although this is a big hotel with restaurants, bar, etc, the experience was akin to being in a Super 8 next to a Walmart. Things started off badly and went downhill from there. The desk clerk at check-in was playing the game of "your room isn't ready, can we interest you in a more expensive room for a significant upcharge?" He was very, very persistent. When we declined each offer (3 different higher levels of room, in descending amounts of extra $), we were told we'd need to wait an hour or more for a room. We decided to wait...but then sitting in the lobby I checked in online and a room magically appeared for us. The hotel is very much the worse for wear, and inside it's like an institution. Hallways are very, very long and dark, with worn and stained carpeting. There are too few elevators - we had to walk the equivalent of the city block (not exaggerating) to get to an elevator from our room. The standard rooms are small and dingy. Also, be aware that this hotel is in the Tenderloin. It's a couple of blocks to Union Square and the cable car, public transport, etc. This was not a problem in the daytime, but we ended up taking Ubers at night. I would never have stayed here if not for the conference, and at the very expensive rates they charged (even with a conference deal), it was not a good value. We stayed at a different Hilton in the financial district immediately prior to this trip for less $, nicer room, nicer people, better location.

Amazing conference hotel in the center of San Francisco

Liked:Staying at the Union Square Hilton was an overall amazing experience. It is a premier venue for conferences, with excellent infrastructure for such purposes. Beyond that the rooms were great, clean, up to date, well serviced, and I recommend everyone to get one of the balcony rooms with the best view of SF in the whole city (and if you can’t get one of those rooms, at least get a drink in the sky bar). The best about the experience was the amazing, professional, and friendly staff. I want to especially thank Abdullah at the reception, who helped me with all kind of last minute extra requests that I had. I have never met a receptionist who is so professional and knowledgeable, while also being so kind and accommodating like him.
