The non-resort, aging condominium complex in paradise.
Liked:I recently stayed at The Point at Poipu, and while its location on Kauai’s south shore is undeniably beautiful, the overall experience fell far short of what I expect from the Hilton name. We’ve stayed at several other Hilton Vacation Club properties, and in its current condition, this one should not be part of the Hilton inventory. It simply does not meet the standards typically associated with Hilton, yet it carries Hilton-level pricing. Had this been my first experience, it would have seriously discouraged me from considering Hilton properties in the future.
The resort is visibly aging, with peeling and mismatched paint, worn exterior finishes, and an overall sense of deferred maintenance that’s impossible to ignore. The setting may be stunning, but the property itself feels neglected and out of alignment with the quality Hilton promises.
Although the hotel repeatedly claimed to be in the middle of renovations, there was absolutely no evidence to support that statement. No workers, no construction noise, no blocked‑off areas—nothing that would suggest construction of any kind. It felt misleading, as if “renovation” was being used as a blanket explanation rather than a genuine description of ongoing work.
The layout is another major frustration. Parking is near the rooms but you "can't get there from here", and reaching your unit often requires hauling luggage across long distances and then navigating remote staircases. For families, older guests, or anyone arriving after a long flight, this setup is inconvenient and poorly designed.
Noise is also an issue. The buildings have poor sound insulation, and it becomes especially noticeable when children are staying in the unit above. Footsteps, running, and general activity carry loudly through the ceilings, making it difficult to relax or sleep. For a property marketed as a peaceful oceanfront escape, the noise level is surprisingly high.
The pool situation is another major disappointment. The resort’s only pool is essentially a kiddie pool, with a maximum depth of about three feet. It’s well-manicured and fine for small children, but it is not a swimming pool by any reasonable standard. For a property with over 200 units, the lack of a true pool is both surprising and misleading.
The “restaurant” is similarly misrepresented. It's not a proper restaurant at all. What’s advertised as a dining option is really just a poolside bar with four outdoor patio tables and umbrellas—no roof, no indoor seating (other than at the bar itself), and nowhere near the capacity needed for a resort of this size. During my stay, there was no patio service for breakfast or dinner, and I never saw active table service at all. I chose not to eat at what is essentially a bar next to a non‑pool, pool.
Before arrival, I also had a disappointing interaction with the reservations department. The representative I spoke with was curt, dismissive, and unprofessional—an unexpected and unpleasant first impression for a Hilton‑affiliated property.
This property is NOT a resort. It's an aging residential complex on a beautiful (non-swimming) coast.
An authoritative definition of a resort (based on hospitality industry standards) describes it as:
"A full‑service lodging facility that provides extensive amenities, recreational activities, dining options, and on‑site services designed to offer guests a self‑contained vacation experience."
By that standard, The Point at Poipu falls short in several ways:
Full‑service amenities — The property lacks a true swimming pool, has no real restaurant, and offers limited on‑site services.
Recreational activities — Aside from the shallow pool and a small fitness room, there are few activities that qualify as resort‑level.
Dining options — A pool bar with four patio tables is not a dining outlet capable of serving 215 units.
Self‑contained experience — Guests must leave the property for nearly all meals and most recreation. There is no spa. We were activity encouraged to walk to the Grand Hyatt resort next door which is actually a beautifully appointed proper resort which made us feel even worse about our Hilton property.
Maintenance standards — The visible aging, peeling, multi-colored paint, and deferred upkeep do not meet resort‑level expectations.
Noise control — Thin ceilings and poor soundproofing undermine the restful environment expected at a resort.
In short, this property functions more like an aging apartment complex than a resort, and the marketing language does not match the actual experience.
Bottom Line? The Point at Poipu has a fantastic location, but the aging facilities, lack of maintenance, inconvenient layout, poor noise insulation, non‑functional pool, non‑restaurant restaurant, and unprofessional reservations experience make it difficult to recommend at its current price point. With significant renovation and a rethinking of amenities, it could be excellent—but it is far from that today.

Great location, but this property needs some renovations and upkeep.
Liked:The hotel is set in a beautiful location, and the rooms were clean. The outdoor areas including the pool, koi pond and adult spa were well taken care of.
Disliked:There was paint peeling from the exterior walls. Additionally, the floors seemed very thin. I could hear everything going on above me. The internet was not reliable. When I called to get a solution, it took two hours for maintenance to show up to resolve the problem. Additionally, it took a long time to check-in, and there was no water offered in the lobby.
