A Hawaii-esque ezperience in downtown Las Vegas

Liked:The Californis Hotel is my go-to when I want a reliable gaming getaway in Las Vegas. Here you will feel a strong Hawaii-esque influence as many of the guests are older folks from Hawaii. The rooms and bathrooms are clean, although the furniture and plumbing are showing their age. Be aware that not all the electtical outlets work, especially USB charging ports. The front desk and bell staff are friendly and helpful, as is the housekeeping staff. I always am pleased to be greeted with a “Good morning” from the housekeeper. There are decent restaurants on the premises and in the nearby Main Street hotel which adjoins the Cal via an enclosed walkway. The casino is smoky and populated by older Hawaii folks. Dealers can be a bit cold, although there are enough exceptions to make the gaming fun-enough. Cocktail staff is reponsive and reliable. Because of the makeup of the patrons, this casino feels safer than others I have visited.

I Was Very Offended by a Security Guard for No Reason

Liked:On June 14 around 5:15 PM, I experienced something deeply upsetting at the California Hotel in Las Vegas. I’ve worked in this city my entire life—over 60 years—in nearly every area of hospitality: from fountain worker, stocker, porter, and barista to supervisor. I understand the importance of treating all guests and workers with dignity. That’s why I was shocked when a security guard approached me twice and said, “I just want to let you know I’m keeping an eye on you.” I had just gotten off work, wearing my clean-cut work uniform, and was waiting for the bus like I’ve done for over a year. Sometimes I grab a snack, ice cream, or use the restroom at the hotel. I always act respectfully and politely. Also, for the record, I don’t even gamble there. I usually just stop in to grab a snack or use the restroom while waiting for my bus. I’ve avoided their casino because I’ve always lost money there. There was no reason for this comment. I did nothing wrong. I’m not seeking a freebie—just accountability. The guard in question appeared to be an Asian American male, about 5’8”, around 40 years old. I’ve witnessed other questionable interactions involving him that made me wonder about bias. I won’t assume his intent, but the impact of his words was clear: I was singled out unfairly. This kind of behavior should concern management and future guests alike. I hope it is addressed appropriately.

Love this hotel

Liked:Always stay here. So close to Freemont Street,but don’t hear the noise. Walk about 4 mins away. Rooms clean and comfortable. Not a large casino so don’t spend ages walking to room. Market cafe good prices and food. Can walk to deuce bus and mob museum
