Can’t do the basics

Liked:Here for a wedding. The entire wedding is waiting after 4pm to get into rooms. Events start at 6. Probably won’t even have a room by then. Expensive and a big resort fee. Can’t even deliver on the basics. Go somewhere else

Stunning Setting, but Missing a Memorable Sense of Place

Liked:Beautiful setting with an opportunity to create a more memorable atmosphere I chose to stay at The Lodge at St. Edward State Park because of its beautiful location in the state park and because I knew the property had once been considered by McMenamins. Having enjoyed many McMenamins properties over the years, I was curious to see how this hotel would compare. The location is outstanding, and the building itself is impressive. It is clearly positioned as a luxury hotel, and it succeeds in many respects. However, I left feeling that it was missing some of the warmth and character that make certain historic properties truly memorable. The hotel seems to be reaching for a similar feeling with Father Mulligan's Bar and the Tonsorium Bar, but both spaces felt a little too modern. I think these areas would benefit from a more timeless, elegant style with traditional furnishings and a cozier atmosphere. Luxury doesn't have to mean contemporary—sometimes older, classic design creates a much richer sense of place. Since this is a luxury destination rather than a pub-focused hotel, I wouldn't suggest making it more bar-centric. Instead, I'd encourage the management to put even greater emphasis on relaxing amenities like the pool and sauna and on creating inviting spaces where guests naturally want to linger. What McMenamins does so well is create an atmosphere that is difficult to define but easy to feel. My overall impression is that The Lodge could become something truly special by asking, "How do we capture that same sense of warmth, history, and discovery—but interpret it in a more refined, upscale way?" If they achieve that balance, this could become one of the Pacific Northwest's standout destination hotels.
