Great

Liked:Breakfast, cleanliness and atmosphere.
Disliked:Maintenance, there was an issue with water drain. Water didn’t drain out of the tub after shower and I had to report the issue.

Return stay was okay

Liked:I am a regular traveler to the area. The hotel has gotten to be extremely expensive. The is little competition in the Harvard Square area. Effectively, it's the Commander, the Charles Hotel, or the Harvard Square. I did not know that the hotel was embarking on a long renovation period when I booked my room. The renovation was very noisy as such things are. When all is totaled a room is approximately $500 per night. A cost that used to be reserved for such events as Harvard graduation weekend and the Harvard-Yale game is now the regular room rate. Pretty pricey for a 100+ year old hotel that's far from state-of-the-art.

Relies on Proximity to Harvard. Not Great for Events

Liked:EVENT a 70th birthday and Scientific Career Celebration for Esteemed Harvard Professor. The food was ok, but most of the service was awful. One had to go to a little kiosk for any kind of drink. As soon as I did that, they took my plate away. Food was still out, but it was really abrupt and awkward. Whomever is in charge of events here needs some training. The lights were SUPER bright, more appropriate for a conference or an office. It was not at all welcoming, and not especially comfortable. It felt like (except for the gentleman behind the bar) the event staff was barely suffering our presence. This continued as we were shuttle off to Nubar, where the group was hanging out and ordering drinks (thus making money for the hotel). At 11 PM, a very unpleasant man abruptly closed the bar (on a Saturday) This would have been fine, except he did not even smile, or speak to the group politely. I worked in hospitality for 20 years when I was younger. We were instructed to follow the rules, but to ALWAYS be polite and friendly, and explain. At times staff were able to recognize a time to see if an exception could be made for a special occasion. The event, by its nature was nice enough. Thus the 3 stars. This hotel relies on it's proximity to Harvard University. And they act like they are doing their customers a huge favor by even letting them in.

Liked:The hotel, in general, is nice and clean. The location is very convenient, especially being close to Harvard and the surrounding area.
Disliked:The shower was extremely impractical. The design makes it impossible to take a shower without getting your hair wet. There is no option to use a handheld showerhead, and when you turn the knob to start the shower, you get completely soaked instantly. The only way to avoid that is to step out of the tub, turn it on, then step back in — which is very uncomfortable and not practical at all. When my child was sick with a stomach virus, I asked at the reception if they could provide me with a banana. Instead of showing some understanding, they actually charged me for it. It’s not about the $5 but about the complete lack of empathy and hospitality — something unacceptable for a 5-star hotel. The air conditioning unit in the room was outdated and very noisy, clearly from decades ago. It couldn’t be adjusted properly, the windows could only be opened about 10 cm, and the room felt uncomfortably stuffy. The furniture is very old, looking like it hasn’t been updated in 30 years The breakfast is shockingly expensive at $30 per person. In Europe, when you pay €300 a night for a 5-star hotel, you get an outstanding breakfast included. Here, you pay a high room rate and then are asked to pay extra for a very basic breakfast — which makes the value for money feel completely off. And the room we had is not for a family whereas they said we could fit there. We were squeezibg in those 2 almost single beds for 5 nights. Also , you order a tea in a lobby they charge you $4 for a cup of tea in a PAPER cup. For this type of hotel for this money you should get a normal cup and biscuit with it plus honey and lemon While the hotel is clean and in a good location, the outdated facilities, impractical shower, poor service, and extremely high prices make it hard to justify the cost. The lack of customer care and value is very disappointing for a property that positions itself as a 5-star hotel.
